Books

John Levine has been writing books on computer-related topics for almost 20 years. Representative books include:

  • The Internet for Dummies (Wiley Publishing, 2004). Originally published in 1993 and now in its 9th edition, this remains the best selling book about the Internet, and the a popular way for new users to get on-line.
  • Qmail (O'Reilly, 2004). This book guides network and server managers through the process of installing the qmail package and configuring it for a variety of e-mail applications.
  • Fighting Spam for Dummies (Wiley Publishing, 2004). A small topical For Dummies book just about spam. Includes sections on the history and politics of spam, analyzing spam and reporting spammers, filtering software, and more.
  • Linkers and Loaders (Morgan Kaufmann/Academic, 2000). Linkers and loaders are programming development tools that have been in use since the late 1940s but, remarkably, never the subject of a book until now. This book quickly became the standard reference on the topic.
